![]() Until the Equality Act of 2010, it was entirely legal to fire someone just for being LGBT. It’s only in recent years that the rights of transgender people have begun to be taken seriously. Male homosexuality was only (partially) decriminalised in England and Wales in 1967 and as late as 1980 in Scotland and 1982 in Northern Ireland. LGBT acceptance in the workplace has come a long way in recent historyīeing yourself at work used to be incredibly difficult if you were lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. However, there are numerous organisations such as the UK’s leading gay rights charity Stonewall campaigning for LGBT equality and there are many industry-specific and sometimes company-specific LGBT groups. Many colleagues are too scared to speak up against the homophobic harassment, which they witness others experience. ![]() Research supports this fear although figures vary between industries, with some sectors appearing to be more homophobic than others. Although it has never been easier to be Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender, a significant number of LGBT employees are still afraid to ‘come out’ at work because they fear this will lead to harassment and damage their career opportunities. ![]()
